Controlling Serviio in Windows

When installed the Serviio Server program is registered as a “Service” in Windows, which will start “Automatically” on Windows startup. It consists of the logic required to maintain its media library and the logic to receive streams and transmit files and streams, possibly transcoded according to device profiles, to connected DLNA devices.

Serviio also includes a ServiioConsole.exe application that communicates with the Serviio Server to set options and identify media library sources.

The Serviio Server “Service” maybe restarted or stopped at any time by clicking the “Start Serviio service” or “Stop Serviio service” icons in the Windows Start Menu Serviio folder. Similarly the Console application may be restarted (after Serviio starts) by clicking the “Serviio Console” icon in the same menu.

The Serviio Server program may also be started and stopped as a Windows Process under java (if the Serviio Server Service has been stopped) using the startserviio.bat file in the installed Serviio/bin directory. These are useful in testing new versions of Serviio without uninstalling the existing Serviio Server Service.

The Serviio Server will run continuously in the background, maintaining the library and awaiting DLNA messages from attached devices. These actions may be suspended or restarted using the “Stop Server” and “Start Server” buttons on the “Status” tab of the Console. This allows Serviio to be “Paused” without exiting or stopping the Serviio Server Service. This can also help in situations where Serviio is not detected on the network as it'll notify all renderers on the network about it presence again.

Changes made using the Console take effect within the Server immediately upon saving. Changes made to Profiles require the Serviio Server program or Service to be stopped and restarted before they take effect.
